U.S. Senator Katie Britt Advances Funding for Needed Upgrades, Restoration at Dothan, Birmingham Federal Courthouses

WASHINGTON, D.C., August 2, 2024 – U.S. Senator Katie Britt (R-Ala.) advanced $5 million for the Dothan Federal Building and U.S. Courthouse and $4 million for the Hugo Black Courthouse in Birmingham.

The funding was secured by Senator Britt and included in the Fiscal Year 2025 (FY25) Financial Services and General Government Appropriations Act, which passed out of the Senate Appropriations Committee yesterday and now awaits consideration by the full Senate. These funds would enable critical upgrades and restoration work for both facilities.

 The Dothan Federal Building and U.S. Courthouse is in desperate need of an upgrade. To ensure residents of the Wiregrass maintain access to a federal courthouse, Senator Britt advocated and secured these funds, which will ensure the Federal Building and U.S. Courthouse continues to be a prominent anchor site in downtown Dothan.

At almost four decades old, the Hugo L. Black U.S. Courthouse requires substantial upgrades in order to serve the people of Birmingham now and far into the future.

“Alabama’s courts are a pivotal part of our justice system and our constitutional system of checks and balances,” said Senator Britt. “Bringing $5 million home to Dothan’s Federal Building and U.S. Courthouse and $4 million home to the Hugo L. Black U.S. Courthouse will make a substantial difference in keeping these courthouses accessible to Alabamians. I am proud to have secured these key funds in the Senate Appropriations Committee’s bill.”
