(PHOTOS) U.S. Senators Katie Britt, Ted Cruz Meet with Coach Nick Saban, AD Greg Byrne, SWAC Commissioner
WASHINGTON, D.C., September 12, 2024 – Today, U.S. Senators Katie Britt (R-Ala.) and Ted Cruz (R-Texas) met with former University of Alabama Head Football Coach Nick Saban, University of Alabama Athletic Director Greg Byrne, and Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) Commissioner Charles McClelland.
In the meeting, they discussed current challenges affecting the future of collegiate athletics, including the patchwork system of rules governing Name, Image, and Likeness.
“We must take action to protect the integrity and sustainability of collegiate athletics, so generations to come can continue to enjoy their favorite college sports and student-athletes can live their American Dreams,” said Senator Britt.
The SWAC is comprised of historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs) and headquartered in Birmingham, which is also home to the Southeastern Conference (SEC). Alabama State University and Alabama A&M are SWAC members.
This meeting comes after Coach Nick Saban was honored last Saturday in Tuscaloosa with the newly named Saban Field at Bryant-Denny Stadium. In the days after Coach Saban announced his retirement, Senator Britt called for the field to be named in his honor.
