U.S. Senator Katie Britt, Colleagues Introduce Legislation Boosting American Energy Production

March 10, 2025

WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senator Katie Britt (R-Ala.) recently joined Senator Tim Scott (R-S.C.), Congressman August Pfluger (R-Texas), and a bicameral group of their Republican colleagues in introducing the Unlocking Domestic LNG Potential Act.

“American national security starts with American energy dominance. This legislation to streamline the permitting process for LNG export terminals is a critical step in implementing President Trump’s America First energy agenda so foreign customers don’t turn to other suppliers, including our adversaries,” said Senator Britt. “It’s past time we unleash American energy as we work to deliver affordable, reliable energy to hardworking Americans.”

During the Biden-era energy crisis, the administration made an ill-advised decision to halt the approval process for liquified natural gas (LNG) exports, halting America’s then-booming natural gas exports.

The Unlocking Domestic LNG Potential Act would place the permitting process of LNG export terminal construction in the jurisdiction of the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC), eliminating the U.S. Department of Energy’s authority. Senator Britt also cosponsored the Unlocking Domestic LNG Potential Act in the 118th Congress. Read the full text of the legislation here.

“Unlocking American energy production not only plays a vital role in safeguarding our national security, but is the path to lowering energy costs for families across the nation,” said Senator Scott. “Relying on bad actors undoubtedly puts America last, not first. With President Trump back in office, we will be energy independent and dominate once again.”

“President Biden spent four years pandering to progressive climate extremists and restricted future energy exports instead of unleashing American energy production to provide our allies with a secure, affordable energy source. We finally have a President back in office who understands that having efficient, reliable, and affordable energy is the key to U.S. national security,” said Rep. Pfluger. “This legislation cuts the red tape by removing the Department of Energy’s export authorization requirement and streamlining the permitting process. Energy security is national security, and I thank Senator Scott for leading this bill in the Senate and look forward to pushing for its passage in both chambers.”

Senator Britt has long warned freezing new LNG permits would benefit foreign adversaries. A report last year found that European Union countries imported 7% more LNG from Russia in the first half of 2024 than in the previous year.

Senate Republicans continue to work alongside President Trump to reverse the stifling regulations of the past four years and unleash the power of American energy. Last month, Senator Britt joined her colleagues in voting to block implementation of the Biden Administration’s Natural Gas Tax, which was passed as part of Democrats’ so-called Inflation Reduction Act (IRA). The resolution now heads to President Trump’s desk to be signed into law.
