U.S. Senator Katie Britt Advances $1.97 Million for City of Bayou La Batre Wastewater Upgrade
WASHINGTON, D.C., August 30, 2024 – U.S. Senator Katie Britt (R-Ala.), as a member of the Senate Committee on Appropriations, locked in $1.97 million for the City of Bayou La Batre in the Fiscal Year 2025 (FY25) Interior, Environment, and Related Agencies Appropriations Act.
This congressionally directed spending would enable the City to make critical upgrades to the Bayou La Batre Wastewater Treatment facility—replacing the headworks and ultraviolet systems. These upgrades would improve the capability, efficiency, safety, and reliability of the wastewater treatment plant, which serves 3,000 water and 1,900 sewer individual customers.
“The Seafood Capital of Alabama needs a water upgrade, and I am proud to have secured funds in the FY25 Interior, Environment and Related Agencies Appropriations Act that would make that possible,” said Senator Britt. “When I joined the Appropriations Committee, I promised to return your hard-earned taxpayer dollars home to Alabama. This appropriations bill, upon full Congressional passage, would make a substantial investment in Bayou La Batre’s infrastructure that will help families and small businesses for years to come.”
“Receiving this grant for our wastewater treatment plant marks a pivotal moment in our commitment to environmental sustainability and community well-being. It’s not just an investment in infrastructure, but a profound recognition of our shared responsibility to protect our natural resources for future generations. This funding will empower us to enhance our treatment processes, improve efficiency, and ensure that we meet and exceed regulatory standards. With this support, we can innovate and implement cutting-edge technologies that will significantly reduce our environmental footprint. We extend our deepest gratitude to Senator Britt for her belief in our mission and for her role in helping us transform our vision into a reality. Together, we are making strides toward a cleaner, healthier environment, affirming our dedication to responsible stewardship and sustainable development,” said Bayou La Batre Mayor Henry D. Barnes, Sr.
“This achievement is a testament to the shared vision of a cleaner, greener future and underscores the importance of collaboration between public and private sectors. We extend our heartfelt thanks to Senator Britt for her trust and commitment to our goals. Her support not only accelerates our progress but also reaffirms our dedication to safeguarding our water resources and enhancing the quality of life for all our residents. As we move forward, this grant will be instrumental in achieving our objectives and setting a new standard in wastewater management. Together, we are laying the foundation for a more sustainable and resilient environment for generations to come,” said Mobile County Commission President Randall Dueitt.
“We extend our heartfelt thanks to Senator Britt for her unwavering support and dedication to our project. Her commitment to enhancing our infrastructure reflects a shared vision for a healthier, more sustainable future. This funding will have a profound and lasting impact on our ability to provide safe, clean water and protect our natural resources. As we move forward, we are excited about the positive changes this grant will bring to our community and the environment,” said Director of Water & Sewer Operations at the Utilities Board for the City of Bayou La Batre Dan McCrory.
The FY25 Interior, Environment, and Related Agencies Appropriations Act now awaits consideration by the full Senate.
