February 19, 2025

WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senator Katie Britt (R-Ala.) today celebrated a recently announced $20.3 million investment from the Department of Transportation (DOT) for the St. Bernard Bridge in Cullman. These federal funds will replace and relocate the existing two-lane St. Bernard Bridge on U.S. Hwy 278/AL Hwy 69 which crosses Eight Mile Creek.

“This $20.3 million for replacing the St. Bernard Bridge is a huge win for the people of Cullman County and Alabamians who travel this important thoroughfare. This critical infrastructure improvement is a strategic and responsible investment for our state’s future,” said Senator Britt. “I am proud to have advocated on behalf of the City of Cullman to secure this funding. I will continue working tirelessly to bring Alabamians’ hard-earned taxpayer dollars back home to grow opportunity and strengthen communities across our great state.”

“The City of Cullman would like to thank Sen. Britt – along with Sen. Tuberville and Congressman Aderholt – for their efforts in assisting with the securing of grant funding for the widening of US Hwy 278 and the St. Bernard Bridge.  This project is vital to our ongoing efforts to improve safety, mobility, and regional connectivity,” said Mayor Woody Jacobs.

“I was proud to write a letter of support for the City of Cullman in securing this vital infrastructure investment,” said Congressman Aderholt. “Replacing and widening the St. Bernard Bridge is crucial for enhancing transportation safety and efficiency in our region. This project will not only improve traffic flow along US Hwy 278 but will also support economic growth and ensure our infrastructure can meet future demands.”

Senator Britt has long advocated for the City of Cullman’s grant application, expressing her support in two separate letters to the former Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg.
