U.S. Senator Katie Britt Continues Call for Immediate Passage of Laken Riley Act Following Killer’s Guilty Verdict
WASHINGTON, D.C., November 20, 2024 – U.S. Senator Katie Britt (R-Ala.) released the following statement after Laken Riley’s killer was found guilty:
“Laken Riley’s family is finally seeing justice after having lost their loving daughter. While it’s welcome news her killer will be behind bars, we must ensure this never happens again in America. Jose Antonio Ibarra should not have been in the U.S. in the first place, but the Biden-Harris Administration’s weak border enforcement allowed and welcomed dangerous individuals to come here illegally.”
“I remain committed to passing the Laken Riley Act to ensure more families are spared this type of unthinkable tragedy. With President Trump’s second term, I look forward to the return of strong border and interior immigration enforcement policies that keep our communities safe.”
Background:
Earlier this year, Senators Britt and Ted Budd (R-N.C.) introduced S.3933, the Senate companion to H.R. 7511, Representative Mike Collins’ (R-Ga.) Laken Riley Act that passed the House in an overwhelming bipartisan vote of 251-170.
The bipartisan legislation would require U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to arrest illegal aliens who commit theft, burglary, larceny, or shoplifting offenses and would mandate that these aliens are detained until they are removed from the United States so they cannot reoffend and commit further crimes.
Additionally, this legislation would ensure that States have standing to bring civil actions against federal officials who refuse to enforce immigration law or who violate the law. Senate Democrats have twice now blocked passage of this commonsense legislation.
