U.S. Senator Katie Britt Fights Against Unfair Trade Practices, Protects American Workers

February 26, 2025

WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senator Katie Britt (R-Ala.) joined Senator Todd Young (R-Ind.) and a bipartisan group of 14 Senate colleagues in introducing the Leveling the Playing Field 2.0 Act. This legislation would strengthen U.S. trade remedy laws and ensure they remain effective tools to fight against unfair trade practices.

“Time and time again, the Chinese Communist Party has shown that they’re not willing to play by the rules that govern international commerce. Congress must act to mitigate the abuse of regulatory loopholes that harm hardworking American families, Main Street small businesses, entrepreneurs, and critical industries,” said Senator Britt. “I will continue fighting in the Senate to protect American workers, properly enforce U.S. trade agreements, and strengthen our national security.”

The Leveling the Playing Field 2.0 Act, introduced in 2023, was also cosponsored by Senator Britt last Congress. This legislation would update the original Leveling the Playing Field Act, which became law in 2015, by providing more tools to the Department of Commerce to stop circumvention. This bill aims to push back against the Chinese Communist Party’s (CCP) anti-free market practices and protect American workers.

“Our bill will protect American jobs and combat China’s unfair trade practices,” said Senator Young. “China has distorted the free market by dumping undervalued products and subsidizing industries, actions designed to harm American businesses and workers. This legislation will help level the playing field to ensure the United States can outcompete the Chinese Communist Party.”

Senator Britt recently voted to confirm President Trump’s Commerce Secretary, Howard Lutnick. Following his successful confirmation, she stated, “Hardworking Americans deserve a U.S. Secretary of Commerce who puts their economic needs first—fighting unfair trade practices and supporting families across Alabama and America. That is exactly what Howard Lutnick is going to do.”

Notably, around half of the unfair trade cases are in the steel industry. Senator Britt has consistently fought for Alabama’s steel workers and steel manufacturing industry. Recently, ArcelorMittal announced an investment of $1.2 billion to build a steel manufacturing facility in AlabamaSenator Britt praised this development saying, “Onshoring critical supply chains is imperative to fuel a powerful new era of Made in America excellence. I’m proud of how Alabamians continue to lead the way in furthering America’s global manufacturing leadership.”
