U.S. Senator Katie Britt Renews Call for All-Senators Classified Briefing on Terror Threats to U.S. Amid Border Crisis

June 12, 2024

WASHINGTON, D.C., June 12, 2024 — U.S. Senator Katie Britt (R-Ala.) is continuing to warn of the grave dangers facing the American homeland amid the ongoing crisis at the United States’ porous southern border.

70 days ago, Senators Britt and Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) sent a letter to Majority Leader U.S. Senator Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) and Minority Leader U.S. Senator Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) requesting a classified, all-member briefing on the rising threats to the homeland from radical Islamic terror groups, including ISIS-K, an offshoot of ISIS that exists primarily in Afghanistan. To date, a briefing with Administration officials has not been scheduled.

Just yesterday, news reports stated that U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) arrested eight foreign nationals with alleged ties to ISIS who entered the U.S. illegally via the southern border before traveling to New York, Los Angeles, and Philadelphia. These media reports reaffirm the continued pressing need for an immediate all-senators classified briefing.

“70 days ago, Senator Graham and I called for an all-member classified briefing on the rising threat of ISIS-K and other terror organizations against our homeland. Yesterday’s reporting confirmed our warnings – the porous southern border is putting every American in danger. Thankfully, incredible law enforcement officers, including ICE personnel, arrested these individuals before they could harm innocent Americans. This should be an urgent wake-up call to people on both sides of the aisle. I continue to call on Senator Schumer to schedule a classified briefing for all Senators on the rising threat of radical Islamic terror groups taking advantage of the ongoing border crisis,” said Senator Britt.

In their letter this April, Senators Britt and Graham wrote, “As many experts have warned, the U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan has created new threats and once again transformed the country into a safe haven and operational base for terrorist groups.  Our nation cannot afford to continue adhering to a policy of inaction towards these threats…ISIS-K’s recent attacks further highlight their ability to strike around the globe.  Their operations include a suicide bombing in Iran in January of 2024 and a massacre at a concert hall in Moscow in March.  Further, ISIS-K planned attacks against civilians in Germany and the Netherlands were also thwarted.  It is evident the potential and desire for strikes by ISIS-K around the globe, including against the United States, remains significant.”
