U.S. Senators Katie Britt, Chuck Grassley Seek to Permanently Authorize, Expand E-Verify Program
WASHINGTON, D.C. ā U.S. Senator Katie Britt (R-Ala.), a member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, joined Chairman Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) and several of their Republican colleagues in introducing the Accountability Through Electronic Verification Act, which would assist employers in certifying the legal status of their workforce.
āIām proud to support legislation that protects American workers and deters illegal migration. The E-Verify program is critical to ensuring that illegal aliens cannot work unlawfully in the United States. The American people delivered a clear verdict on this issue last November, and I will continue working to ensure that verdict is carried out,” said Senator Britt.
The legislation would permanently authorize, expand and require employers to participate in the free, internet-based E-Verify program, which helps determine if a current or prospective employee is authorized to work in the United States. The bill includes provisions to provide E-Verify access to businesses in rural communities or areas without internet capabilities. Read the full bill text here.
āE-Verify is a proven tool for employers, including myself, to ensure our businesses are legally staffed. By reducing incentives for illegal immigration and safeguarding job opportunities for Americans and other legal workers, our bill would boost accountability in the workforce and support our nationās small businesses,ā said Chairman Grassley.
In addition to cosponsoring this legislation last Congress, Senator Britt has been a champion for securing Americaās southern border and enforcing immigration laws across our nationās interior. Earlier this year, Senator Brittās Laken Riley Actbecame President Donald J. Trumpās first bill signed into law as the 47th President of the United States. This bipartisan legislation is the most significant immigration enforcement and border security related bill to be enacted into law in nearly three decades.
In a recent opinion piece, Senator Britt emphasized her continued commitment to protecting American families and communities: āWe will keep the promises we made to the American people by securing our border, detaining and deporting criminal illegal aliens, and restoring order throughout the United States, from the Pacific coast to the shores of the Atlantic. Our efforts began with the Laken Riley Act, but they do not end there. We will continue to turn the will of the people into law, and we will make America safe again.ā
Senator Britt also introduced the WALL Act, which would appropriate $25 billion to finish building a wall on our southern border without raising taxes on U.S. citizens or increasing the national debt. āThe United States needs a completed border wallāit is just common sense to have a physical barrier in place to ensure only lawful entry into our country,ā the Senator stated.
