U.S. Senators Katie Britt, Eric Schmitt Introduce ENABLE Act, Empower Americans with Disabilities and their Families
WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senator Katie Britt (R-Ala.) joined Senator Eric Schmitt (R-Mo.) in reintroducing the Ensuring Nationwide Access to Better Life Experience (ENABLE) Act. The ENABLE Act would allow individuals with disabilities and their families to save and invest through tax-free savings accounts while protecting eligibility to federal programs like Medicaid and Supplemental Security Income (SSI).
“The ENABLE Act would empower families and enhance economic opportunities for Americans with disabilities. Every child deserves a pathway to reach their full potential, and this legislation would enable just that—by providing opportunities to invest and save towards their futures. Last Congress, this bipartisan legislation passed the Senate, and I look forward to getting this passed into law in the 119th Congress,” said Senator Britt.
There are three Achieving a Better Life Experience (ABLE) provisions set to expire this year including ABLE to Work, ABLE Saver’s Credit, and 529 to ABLE rollover. TheENABLE Act would permanently enshrine these provisions into law, providing certainty to those individuals and their families and their families.
“I was proud to lead the introduction of the ENABLE Act in the 118th Congress, where this critical legislation passed the Senate. I entered public service to fight for people like my son Stephen. Stephen was born with a rare genetic disease, is on the autism spectrum, has epilepsy, and is non-verbal. I know firsthand how critical ABLE accounts are to individuals with disabilities and their families. ABLE accounts allow individuals with disabilities to save for their future and ease burdens on their families. It’s a common-sense solution that provides an easy fix for those who depend on ABLE Accounts, and I’m proud to have bipartisan, bicameral support for this important piece of legislation,” said Senator Schmitt.
In September 2024, Senator Britt participated in a roundtable with Senator Schmitt to discuss and raise awareness for the ENABLE Act, which passed the Senate that same month.
During the roundtable, Senator Britt emphasized the importance of this legislation and welcomed Alabama State Treasurer Young Boozer, who also participated in the discussion. “I’m also proud of the work that Alabama has done. . . in its own ABLE Savings Plan program – and particularly the leadership of our Treasurer . . . I know that y’all were pleased to hear him talk about the success of our program, and the opportunity it has provided to over 1,000 individuals in our great state. I look forward to continuing to work with him and in particular, to partner on this, as well as [with] every person in this room,” she stated in her remarks.
In February 2017, the State of Alabama’s Treasury Office launched the Alabama ABLE Savings Plan. Created in 2014, these accounts allow people with disabilities and their families to save and invest through tax-free savings accounts without losing eligibility for federal programs like Medicaid and SSI.
